USA Today reports a growing wave of companies in all sectors - technology, financial services, energy, retail, manufacturing - are embracing environmentally safe practices, otherwise known as going green!
SSCG Consultant Nicole Eicks observes a few easy ways a salon can go green:
1. Air Quality
Change those filters. EPA sources indicate we spend approximately 90 percent of our time indoors whether at home or in the workplace. Replenishment items like air filters are important for homes and businesses alike. Improving indoor air quality is vital for our health and our environment. If you have changed your air filters lately, you may have noticed how the hairspray affects air-flow. Your HVAC will thank you too!
2. Drinking Water
Ditch the plastic. Plastic bottles are causing our planet some serious problems. Consider utilizing water filtration systems rather than purchasing bottled water to greatly reduce plastic waste.
3. Conduct a brainstorm session with your staff
The hard part is getting your staff to change their negative environmental behaviors. Talk to your staff about ways they can contribute to your salon's go green plan.
4. Recycle
You can actually save enough on your garbage service by recycling, that it will pay for itself. Contact your local company…foils can be recycled without being clean (we use a lot of those), color bottles, cardboard, paper etc. Make it convenient for your staff and guests.
5. Reuse
Find color gloves that can be reused, make your guest service beverage area green by using real coffee cups and water glasses. Give your guests incentives when they reuse a salon gift bag. Offer to recycle product bottles for your guests when they bring them back for a new purchase, offer a loyalty program bring in 5 used and your 6th purchase is free.
6. Conserve energy
Turn things off when not in use, turn down the heat just one degree saves 1%.
Last but not least, share all of these ideas with your guests, they will appreciate your community service!
